Fireweed was adopted as the official Yukon flower on March 27, 1957. This purple flower grows along Yukon roadsides, river bars and clearings from mid-July to September. The fireweed is a tall plant with many small, purple, and some dark pink flowers.
On my maiden voyage to the Yukon, about 20 minutes into my first walk to the salmon run, I came across this sweetie limping down the road by the dam, coxed her into a treed area and she lay down right in front of me happy to put on a show and pose willingly for my camera.
I will never forget my first trip to the Yukon!
